Lu Warner has been fly fishing and tying flies since the young age of 8. His childhood years were spent on the small streams of New England and Quebec chasing the elusive native brookie with gleeful passion. Pursuing his passion for the fish and the beautiful country that they inhabit, he has spent a large part of his life fly fishing for Trout, Steelhead and Salmon in Alaska, New Zealand, British Columbia, Quebec, Argentina, Chile, and the Rocky Mountain West. Since 1985, he has worked as a fly fishing guide in Idaho, Montana, Colorado, Alaska, Argentina and Southern Chile. From May through October he guides for Dragonfly Anglers in Crested Butte, Colorado and is in Chile and Argentina the rest of the year.
In 1989 Lu started Western Spirit Cycling, a mountain bike touring company based in Moab, Utah. For 8 years Lu took people from around the world on multi-day mountain bike adventures in Utah, Montana, Colorado, Arizona, and Idaho. This highly regarded and successful company has been written up in Bicycling, Mountain Biking, Outside, Newsweek, the New York Times and several other mainstream publications.
In 1996 he sold the business to pursue his dreams of fly fishing, riding his bike, hiking and exploring the world. For three years he worked as a consultant for the business exploring new mountain bike routes internationally and in the U.S as well. While traveling through Southern Chile with mountain bike and fly rod in 1995 and again in 1996, he was struck by the incredible natural beauty, great fishing and hiking as well as the hospitality and warmth of the Chilean people. In 1997 he returned to Chile with a few fly fishing clients and since then he has extensively traveled, fished and explored much of Patagonia. In 2006 he realized a life long dream and purchased the Valle Bonito Lodge. From this ideal setting, one has easy access to the rivers, lakes, mountains and vibrant Chilean culture that add up to create a perfect playground for the adventure traveler and fly fisherman. Additionally, from the Valle Bonito he can offer excellent hiking and fishing trips to nearby Argentina with a variety of interesting itineraries and destinations. With a host of excellent connections throughout both Southern Chile and Argentina, Lu's expertise will help you decide the best options for you. His specialty for many years has been the private trips that he puts together for specific groups. If you are interested in visiting Patagonia and want some options, give Lu a call and he'll be happy to discuss various trip possibilities and activities.
Lu believes very strongly in creating a responsible tourist business, buying locally and helping to support the local economy. At the Valle Bonito, all attempts are made to employ local guides, cooks, and staff. Our neighbors, the Poleto family, are an integral part of our life and provide us with meat from their animals, milk from their cows, and produce from their 500 acre homestead across the river. Their wisdom, kindness and generosity enriches not only our lives but the experiences of our guests as well. The Chilean people are the heart and soul of the country and the many friendly and professional relationships that Lu has developed in Chile over years of traveling there are sure to enhance your Patagonian experience as it has his.
