Argentina Fly Fishing

Argentina has been a famous destination for fly fishermen for many years. On this "dry side" of the mountains the rivers generally have less of a gradient than the ones in Chile and are less prone to flood events which assures rich insect life and excellent dry fly fishing throughout the summer months. Most of the rivers and lakes originate near the high peaks of the Andes and flow gently out into the pampas or grasslands of Eastern Patagonia. Just across the border from the Valle Bonito lies the town of Esquel, Argentina which is an excellent base to explore a variety of fertile waters with excellent fishing for Browns, Rainbows and Landlocked Salmon nearby. Here, in the Argentinan Patagonia, the fisheries are strictly regulated and highly protected. "Catch and Release" with barbless hooks is the norm. Resultantly, the fish here grow big and the trout fishing is fantastic, with a diversity of nearby Rivers, Lakes and Spring Creeks in which to wet a line. Many of the waters here are private which also insures the high quality of the fishing.

I am happy to offer 2 different 7-10 day itineraries in Argentina, one originating in Bariloche and the other originating in Esquel. Both offer fishing as it was in the Western U.S. some 30 years ago and can be customized to fit your timeframe, budget and angling interests. On our trips here, we will stay in first-class Hosterias and Cabins while fishing a variety of waters for trout that can exceed 4 kilos in size. Dry fly fishing is the norm and prolific hatches can and do occur on all of the waters which we fish.

If you arrive in Bariloche, we will transfer 2 hours to the Cholila area where we will base a few days and fish Lake Cholila, the Carrielufu River, the Rivadavia River in Los Alerces National Park, and the Tigre River among others. In this area you will have the rare opportunity to fish for Landlocked Atlantic Salmon as well as Browns and Rainbows. From Cholila we will then travel South 2 hours to Esquel where we will base in very comfortable cabins for the remainder of the trip. From Esquel we will fish many different venues including the famous and private Spring Creek, Arroyo Pescado, the Rio Grande, Laguna Willimanco, the Corcovado River, Lago Rosario, Nant Y Fall Creek and the Corintos River. Depending on the time of year and water levels we may also float the Chubut River for a 1-3 night camping/fishing trip. Each day we will choose between the best angling options and return to Esquel at night to sample some of the great food and ambience of this isolated Patagonian town. At the end of your trip, we will transfer you 3 1/2 hours by Van back to Bariloche.
