The Tour of Patagonia is an amazing ride. Taking anywhere from 8 to
14 days, the trip begins in Esquel, Argentina in the high desert. Our
first day we ride over a low pass in the Andes into the Futaleufú
Valley and our Valle Bonito lodge on the banks of the Espolón River.
From here, our route continues down the Futaleufú Valley, alongside the
mighty river that carved this deep valley, through an incredible
wilderness of peaks and temperate rain forest. The Futaleufú empties
its might into Lago Yelcho, a 25 mile long lake that we follow in the
shadow of ice caps and glaciers to the Fiord land of Chaiten. Our route
stays near the coast through the magnificent Parque Pumalin, where we
visit 3500-year-old Alerce trees and soak in a relaxing hot springs
underneath the Michimuida ice cap. From Pumalin there are no roads to
the north and we will board a ferry for the 4-hour crossing of the
Renihue Fiord and Gulf of Ancud. Once back on land, we continue to
follow the coast along the Reloncavi Estuary riding beneath huge
snowcapped volcanoes, at times on the waters edge. At the small village
of Rio Puelo we leave the coast and follow the Rio Puelo through series
of lakes back over the Andes and down into Argentina. To complete this
loop we ride south on the edge of the huge Parque Argentino los Alerces
back into Esquel.
Our second itinerary includes spending a week at our Valle Bonito
Lodge, from the lodge we can head off on many different day rides and
return each evening to relax and enjoy. While cycling is the emphasis,
during the week we can combine many different activities including
fly-fishing, sea kayaking, hiking, rafting and drinking Pisco, the
local favorite.
